GOODWILL
MESSAGE PRESENTED BY PROFESSOR CHINWE VERONICA ANUNOBI, NATIONAL LIBRARIAN/CEO
NATIONAL LIBRARY OF NIGERIA AT THE 2ND AFRICA REGIONAL WORKSHOP OF
THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR SOCIAL SCIENCE INFORMATION SERVICES AND
TECHNOLOGY, FROM 4TH – 7TH OCTOBER, 2022 AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA.
Protocol
I am honoured to give a
goodwill message at this propitious occasion of the 2nd Africa
Regional Workshop of the International Association for Social Science
Information Services and Technology holding from 4th – 7th
October, 2022 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
The theme of the
conference ‘’Data Literacy and the
Fourth Industrial Revolution’’ is crucial for the 21st century.
I acknowledge the
efforts of the International Association for Social Science Information
Services and Technology in gathering stakeholders for this workshop on data
literacy which has taken a centre stage in the global knowledge economy.
In this
age of information and technology, we are at the dawn of the “Fourth Industrial
Revolution also known as Industrial 4.0”, from flexible work times to
work-from-anywhere, connecting from anywhere and everywhere all the time.
Data literacy will be the universal language of the
fourth industrial revolution, Data is so crucial to the success
of this generation. Increasing number of organizations, institutions, academicians
and businesses demand some degree of data literacy competences from all
employees. Conscious of the fact that almost everything can be
targeted and measured, data literacy is a crucial component of growth
and development.
The idea behind the
Fourth Industrial Revolution is encapsulated in the society’s pivotal shift
from industrial to information-driven society which is gaining momentum for
good reason. This move is accompanied by significant anxiety and fear that robotics, artificial intelligence (AI),
and globalization will position the next generation of workers on a jobless
crisis path. Data scientists and those who possess skills in analytics are
increasingly in demand as virtually all industries continue to adopt new ways
to use data for expensive decision making. Hence it is not surprising that
IASSIST has deemed it necessary to organise this workshop with the view to
empower participants for the deployment of data competences in decision making.
Once more, I congratulate the LOC
and indeed IASSIST for this noble and insightful outing.
It is my utmost desire
that all participants at the end of this workshop will be able to leverage
data, blending data skills, creative insights and analytical thinking to fuel
decision making in their various life endeavours, and be a global advocate,
champions and flag bearers of data literacy and the fourth industrial
revolution.
I wish you all a successful deliberation and journey mercies back to your various destinations.
