From Shelves to Screens: The Digital Evolution of National Library of Nigeria

By Azeez Elijah Olawale

In the annals of Nigeria’s quest for intellectual sovereignty and educational advancement, the establishment of the National Library of Nigeria in 1964 marked a defining milestone. It was conceived not merely as a depository of books, but as a custodian of the nation’s collective knowledge, memory, and aspirations. Today, six decades later, that vision has evolved and indeed matured into a digital powerhouse of information aptly named the National Virtual Library of Nigeria, accessible via https://virtuall.nln.gov.ng/

Under the progressive and transformative leadership of Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, (Digital National Librarian) the National Library has embarked on a monumental transformation, transcending from the age of bound volumes and dusty shelves to the realm of interconnected servers, digitized documents, and round-the-clock knowledge access. This is not merely a technological upgrade. It is a philosophical reorientation, one that redefines how Nigerians and other users of National Library of Nigeria resources access, engage with, and disseminate knowledge.

Understanding the Vision

The National Virtual library of Nigeria is not just a digital version of the National Library of Nigeria, It is, in essence, a reimagination of library service delivery in the digital age. The platform responds to the changing dynamics of information consumption, where immediacy, accessibility, and mobility have become cardinal virtues.

It is a strategic intervention in a time of increasing digital divide, literacy challenges, and information asymmetry. It asserts boldly that knowledge must no longer be a privilege of the few but a right of all including urban and rural, young and old, academic and vocational.

Some features of the National Virtual library of Nigeria that Redefine Access to Knowledge

The Benefits of National Virtual library of Nigeria Platform.

The implications of this digital leap include but not limited to the following:

  1. I don't think there's any need for a change of name and designation of the National Library and the National Librarian as indicated in the above write up. The application of ICT to the operations of the National Library doesn't and shouldn't warrant a change of name nor designation.
