As a library and Information Professional deeply invested in the informational ecosystem of Nigeria, I have observed with growing concern the pervasive impact of misinformation and the persistent challenges of insecurity plaguing our nation. These two issues, seemingly disparate, are often connected to each other, feeding on societal anxieties and exploiting vulnerabilities created by a lack of reliable information. In this context, the role of the National Library of Nigeria and libraries nationwide transcends the traditional perception of mere book repositories; we are, in fact, frontline defenders against the tide of falsehood and important allies in fostering a more informed, resilient and patriotic citizenry.
The digital age, while offering unprecedented access to information, has simultaneously amplified the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Sensational headlines and unverified claims can quickly proliferate across social media platforms, fueling fear, distrust, and even inciting violence. Libraries, equipped with skilled professionals and a commitment to information literacy, serve as important bulwarks against this infodemic. We empower individuals with the critical thinking skills necessary to discern credible sources from fabricated content. Through workshops, digital literacy programs, and curated online resources, we guide Nigerians on how to evaluate information, identify bias, and understand the many issues that often underlie insecurity.
Moreover, libraries contribute directly to building safer communities by providing access to verified information about security threats, emergency preparedness, and civic responsibilities. By partnering with relevant government agencies and community organizations, we can disseminate accurate and timely information that can help citizens make informed decisions and take appropriate precautions.
Our physical and digital spaces offer neutral ground for dialogue and learning, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding, which are essential in countering the divisive narratives that often fuel conflict. In essence, the National Library and its counterparts across Nigeria are not just keepers of the past but active participants in shaping a more secure and informed future, one accurate piece of information at a time.
