The corner will house information materials and resources from, and about Bulgaria for public use.
Speaking during the ceremony, Prof. Anunobi stated that the Nigerian Corner is already in existence at the Bulgarian National Library which houses information resources from, and about Nigeria. It affords Nigerian students and researchers in Bulgaria the opportunity to access any information about Nigeria from that Corner.
According to her, the establishment of this corner was in furtherance of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both Countries to exchange both educational and human resources. She commended the tireless effort of His Excellency, Ambassador Yanko Yordonov who facilitated the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding. According to the Prof. Anunobi, while she signed for Nigeria, her Bulgarian counterpart Associate Prof. Krasimira Aleksandrova signed for her country. The partnership will enable both countries to:
- Exchange library documents and materials
- Exchange of library specialists
- Promote cooperation in the field of librarianship, bibliography, scientific information and manuscript collections
- Participate in other projects such exhibitions and so on.
The National Librarian informed that the Corner is open to all Nigerians and non Nigerians, who seek information from and about Bulgaria. She stated that in due course, the National Library of Nigeria will create a virtual Bulgarian Corner in their website, to make the Corner accessible to people who cannot visit the physical Corner.
In his remarks, the Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yanko Yordonov stated that Nigeria is endowed with rich and diverse cultures and languages. He assured that the literature presented to the National Library of Nigeria will give National Library readers insight that Bulgaria and Nigeria will work hand in hand to deepen the existing relationship as between both countries, which has been on for over sixty years.
According to Mr. Yordanov, "I am proud of the two National Libraries taking the lead in celebrating this occasion in this beautiful and extraordinary manner underlining the sixty years of relationship.”
He further commended the Prof. Anunobi for the accomplishment and achievements assuring that it stands out as a foundation for at least another sixty years.
Also speaking, the Bulgarian National Librarian, Associate Prof. Krasimira Aleksandrova who virtually joined the ceremony via a zoom meeting expressed optimism that such move between Nigeria and Bulgaria will strengthen the relationship between both countries and open information windows for learning.
Also speaking, the President of the Nigeria Library Association, Pastor Dominic Omokaro commended the efforts of the National Librarian in promoting librarianship. He emphasized that such gestures will enhance learning. He also commended the Bulgarian Ambassador for sustaining the diplomatic relationship for these sixty years.
