Nigeria will be proud of a book titled “Nigerian Migration Dynamics and Governance

The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi has said that Nigeria would be proud of a book titled “Nigerian Migration Dynamics and Governance” published by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Centre for Migration studies {CMS}. She stated this at the public presentation of a book, organized by the Embassy of Switzerland in conjunction with the University in Abuja, at the Swiss Residence, in Abuja on Monday 13th December, 2021. The National Librarian highlighted the importance of the book readers as it will educate people, especially those who engage in illegal migration to European Countries and other locations of the World, adding that many Nigerians, out of ignorance, get involved in illegal migration through very tortuous and humiliating circumstances that sometimes cost them their lives. She concluded that the book would stand out as a major reference point for Teachers, Students and policy makers on migration and the public, expressing optimism that the book will correct many mistakes by Nigerians who saw an illegal migration as an option for a better life. 

Meanwhile in his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Esimone, expressed appreciation to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund for their support and encouragement throughout the process of the research, he also appreciated the effort of the Swiss Embassy for sponsoring the launch and his team, Centre for Migration Studies {CMS} for their unalloyed commitment and enthusiasm throughout the process of the research work. He commended them for raising the University’s image in the global research community. 

The Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust fund {TEDFUND} Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro, in his goodwill message lamented the incessant loss of lives as a result of illegal migration by People. He further stated that although migration in itself is not illegal, it has to be done through the authorized process as established by the respective countries. this had to be done through the Authority. 

The book was reviewed by Dr. Martins Ohimoyibo who during his presentation stated many people thought that migration is a disaster but they got it wrong, he said migration has been there, right from time, he added that people must move from one place to another in search for livelihood but that had to be regulated. He said irregular migration caused many people their lives and properties. Dr. Ohimoyibo revealed that he was privilege to see people through the internet from African Countries going through the desert wanted to migrate to European Countries and in the process they lost their lives. Also, the Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria in Diaspora Commission, Dr. Mrs. Abike Dabiri Erewa during her goodwill message stated that the Commission seeks for partnership with key stakeholders to address with key stakeholders to address the situation through advocacy campaigns and creation of awareness to enlighten the people on the dangers associated with irregular migration. In his welcome address, the Swiss Ambassador, Mr. Georg Steiner highlighted the dangers of illegal migration which often cost people their lives and advised people to desist from embarking on it, rather people should follow the due process when aspire to travel.
